États-Unis : Collision fatale entre un hélicoptère militaire et un avion de ligne

Un drame aérien s’est produit ce mercredi 30 janvier 2025 dans le ciel de la capitale américaine, Washington. Un hélicoptère militaire Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk est entré en collision avec un avion de ligne régional d’American Airlines, au-dessus du fleuve Potomac, lors de l’atterrissage de ce dernier à l’aéroport Ronald Reagan, selon la Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Le chef des pompiers de Washington, John Donnelly, a confirmé ce jeudi matin un bilan provisoire de 28 morts et a annoncé le passage d’une opération de sauvetage à une opération de récupération des corps. “Nous ne pensons pas qu’il y ait de survivants”, a-t-il précisé.

L’avion transportait 60 passagers et 4 membres d’équipage, tandis que trois militaires se trouvaient à bord de l’hélicoptère, selon un responsable de l’armée américaine. Parmi les victimes figure un couple de patineurs artistiques russes, Evgenia Shishkova et Vadim Naumov, champions du monde en 1994, ainsi que plusieurs membres de la communauté américaine de patinage artistique, selon les médias.

Avec les deux appareils immergés dans le fleuve Potomac, les opérations de recherche et de secours se déroulent dans des conditions très difficiles. Plus de 300 secouristes sont mobilisés, appuyés par des hélicoptères de la police et de l’armée, ainsi que des bateaux spécialisés en lutte contre les incendies. Des canots pneumatiques et des projecteurs lumineux balaient les eaux du Potomac à la recherche de corps et d’épaves. Les garde-côtes américains ont également été appelés en renfort. “Nous nous attendons à ce que nos opérations durent plusieurs jours”, ont averti les autorités.

L’enquête est en cours pour déterminer les causes exactes de la collision, impliquant la FAA et le National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). L’attention se porte notamment sur la coordination entre l’aviation civile et militaire, les protocoles de contrôle aérien et les facteurs humains.

Le président Donald Trump a réagi sur Truth Social, estimant que la tragédie aurait dû être évitée : “L’avion était sur une trajectoire d’atterrissage parfaite. L’hélicoptère volait droit vers lui pendant un moment. Pourquoi n’a-t-il pas changé d’altitude ou de direction ? Pourquoi la tour de contrôle ne lui a-t-elle pas ordonné de s’écarter ?”, s’est-il interrogé.

Le secrétaire aux Transports, Sean Duffy, a également jugé ce jeudi que la collision était évitables, soulignant que les conditions météorologiques étaient bonnes. Les premiers éléments de l’enquête révèlent que les contrôleurs aériens avaient alerté l’équipage de l’hélicoptère sur la présence de l’avion et lui avaient demandé de “passer derrière” celui-ci. Une bande sonore a enregistré les échanges avant le drame. Quelques instants plus tard, un contrôleur aérien choqué a déclaré : “J’ai juste vu une boule de feu… puis plus rien.”

Ce drame rappelle d’autres accidents aériens survenus dans la région. En 1982, le vol Air Florida 90 s’était écrasé dans le Potomac peu après son décollage, causant 78 morts. Aujourd’hui, alors que les enquêteurs tentent de comprendre ce qui a conduit à ce désastre, les familles des victimes attendent des réponses et la communauté aérienne s’interroge sur les failles potentielles qui ont mené à cette collision meurtrière.
