Evgueni Prigojine – leader du groupe paramilitaire Wagner – est mort ce mercredi 23 août lors du crash d’un avion effectuant la liaison Russie-Saint Pétersbourg. Aucun survivant n’a été retrouvé dans l’avion qui avait à son bord 10 personnes.

«Il y avait 10 personnes à bord, dont 3 membres d’équipage. Selon les premières informations, toutes les personnes à bord sont décédées», a indiqué sur Telegram le ministère russe des Situations d’urgence.

Prigojine, surnommé le cuisinier de poutine, est un homme d’affaires russe membre du cercle rapproché de Vladimir Poutine depuis les années 2000. Il fit fortune dans la restauration. Il cofonda en 2014 la société militaire privée appelée Groupe Wagner, une entreprise spécialisée dans le mercenariat qui vient en soutien à la politique russe.

Toutefois, en juin dernier, Prigojine se rebella contre l’état-major de l’armée russe et du ministre de la défense. Ces hommes avaient pris le contrôle des sites militaires du sud du pays en plein conflit avec l’Ukraine avant de se diriger vers Moscou. Cette situation qui avait ébranlé le président russe s’était résolue avec la signature d’un accord prévoyant le départ de Prigojine pour la Biélorussie. Depuis, la localisation de l’homme d’affaires a toujours été tenue secrète pour des questions de sécurité.

La chaine Telegram Grey Zone, proche de Prigojine et de Wagner, accuse l’armée russe de l’avoir pris pour cible et abattu avec un missile antiaérien
